Tip o' the Day - Find Your Match
To find the perfect natural-looking lipstick shade, "think of the color of your mouth after a good snog," says makeup artist Dick Page. "It's usually a rosy shade that's not too brown." Test different colors by covering half your mouth with lipstick and leaving the other half bare. Once you find a shade that's slightly darker and glossier than the naked side, you have a winner.

Maybelline VolumeXLSeduction Plumping Lipcolor in Passionate Plum
One of our previous reviews, for Maybelline VolumeXLSeduction Plumping Lipcolor in Peach Plump, was also a giveaway. Our winner, Michelle, won a tube of Passionate Plum. She was very kind to review it herself, and sent it along to us. I was excited she liked it as much as I did, and I enjoyed reading her review:
"It's pretty innocuous in the tube, looks quite plain actually. I'm a fan of fancy jars and aesthetics which I suppose is a girly thing, right? When applied to the lips you feel a little 'something' but it's barely noticeable. It's very similar to the feeling you have on your lips after eating something with cayenne pepper on it, but there's no spice, just a faint tingle. I was raised in So Cal on salsa and hot carrots, so I suspect I am less sensitive than most to spicy things. The feeling did not bother me in the slightest. I also have very full lips so I could not tell if there were any plumping effects. I will tell you this: it's my favorite lipstick ever. I'm a make up snob, too. I rarely wear it so anything that pleases me enough to wear it every day is kind of like finding your life mate: it's a keeper.
Why? The color looks awesome on my skin. So much so I don't know if I'll even bother trying the other colors. It also goes on very smoothly and moisturizes well. I didn't notice great staying power but I haven't used it with a lip liner or primer, yet. One or both should extend the wearing time. All in all I would highly recommend this lipstick. All the reviews I read on it (I was trying to find the active ingredients, with no luck) have complimented all of the colors it comes in. None have said anything exciting about it's plumping power. Go figure."

L'oreal Infallible Never Fail Lipstick
However, and this is where some of you may disagree, I'm weird about the way things feel, and literally as soon as I put this on, I was extremely aware that it was there. My lips felt kind of tight, and it drove me completely nuts. It comes with a conditioner that you apply on top of the color, and it helped that feeling of tightness a bit, but not enough for me to wear it again. I have sensory issues and simply could not put up with it. Maybe if I'd been more in love with the color, I could have found a way to save the relationship, but alas, we had to part. Possibly I'll try another color in the future to see if it would be worth it to me, but it would have to be very inexpensive. Like, you know, free.

Revlon Super Lustrous Lip Gloss
A few weeks ago I ran to the store to pick out another shade of this lip gloss. I just couldn't find one that I liked in that same brand so I checked around at all the other lip glosses. I finally decided on this Revlon Super Lustrous Lip Gloss in Foiled for around $6. I'm a lip gloss kind of girl, I've never been a huge fan of lip sticks and stains come in handy ever so often, but I never make them a consistent habit.
Not only do I love lip gloss, I love really shiny lip gloss. Back in my college days when I could spend money on more fanciful things, I would buy Mac Lip Glass. There's something about the way it reflects the light that mesmerizes me! So when I saw that this gloss has light reflecting spheres I was definitely willing to give it a try. Plus it's loaded with moisturizers and even has SPF 15 so really, you can't go wrong.
And it is SO SHINY. The first week I had it I must have applied it 10+ times a day just because it was so super shiny. But therein lies the downfall of lip gloss, you have to reapply it all the time and it's super sticky. Frankly, though, I don't mind. The only time I really wanted to wipe it off was when I was at an outdoor photo shoot and the wind was blowing so hard my hair kept sticking to my lips. Highly annoying, but also a unique case.
All in all I love this gloss. The color is really similar to many other glosses I've used, but it's the shine and the moisturizer and SPF that really seal the deal for me! Read more...

You Ask, We Tell Vol. 3
Britt asks: Do you girls have a product that gets rid of the dark under-eye circles? I'm desperate. Thanks!
Kelli tells: I, too, suffer from MAJOR under-eye circles. So far, I haven't found a perfect wonder cream, but I was mostly happy with the results of Olay Definity Eye Illuminator. It's a little pricey, though, for a small bottle of eye-cream at $23.99. I honestly thing the best "cures" for it are the super-expensive creams I've seen in magazines for at least $100. I know I can't afford that! The only alternative I can recommend is a good, light concealer. I've been using one by Sonia Kashuk's mineral line (from Target) that I apply with my fingers; it blends right in with the rest of my skin and lasts all day. I'm pretty sure I could wear it without any other makeup and it would just look completely natural. I hope that helps a little, and if I ever do find that miracle cure, you'll be the first to know!
Koala Brains asks: Do you wear contacts? I do and have problems with eyeliners even those touted as gentle for contact lens wearers.
Missy tells: Kelli doesn't wear contacts but I do. I tend to stay away from eyeliners for that reason. But I do wear mineral eye shadows, which are extremely powdery and haven't had issues with flaking in my eyes or any irritation. I would give L'oreal Bare Naturale Gentle Mineral Eyeliner a try since it's mineral and uses more natural ingredients, and is probably a lot safer on eyes for contact wearers than other eyeliners out there. Hope that helps!
Mrs. Organic asks: Am I doing something wrong when I put on my L'oreal Infallible lipstick/gloss? It never seems to look right (smooth), but is impossible to remove completely. Thanks for any advice.
Kelli tells: (*Updated*)
I think unless you are applying it to your eyes, you probably aren't doing anything wrong. Most of the reviews I read online were positive, so I doubt there's anything really wrong with it. The only tips I can really provide are first - to make sure your lips are well-exfoliated when you apply it. This can be done by gently rubbing them with a wet washcloth in the shower, or gently rubbing them with a toothbrush. As for removing it, according to what I've read in magazines, cover your lips with Vaseline and wait one minute before wiping it off.
*Since originally sending an answer to you, I have actually tried the Infallible lipstick. Be sure you are letting the first layer dry for two minutes before applying the balm. If you are, then I have to say I think it's the product. I just felt like it looked a little weird on me - kind of like you said - NOT smooth. But I'm wondering if maybe that was just the color I bought...? I may try another color sometime to see if I like it any better. One plus is that it is DEFINITELY "infallible." It was like a war zone trying to get it off. I ended up using eye-makeup remover and that worked pretty well, although I could still see traces of it in my lighted mirror the morning after.
Kendra asks: I have a hard time getting lipstick and lipgloss to last longer than an hour so I don't wear it very often because I hate reapplying all day long. Is there something I can use to make it last longer?
Kelli tells: There are a few options you might try. One is to perhaps first apply a stain on your lips that matches your lipstick/lipgloss, then apply your product. That will ensure that when it wears off, there will still be some color underneath. Makeup artists also suggest the same thing with lipliner. What I've done in the past is put a light coat of lipbalm on, then used a liner that matches my lipstick and put it all over my lips - just like I would the actual lipstick. On top of that I apply the lipstick - and it will last forever. Back when matte lipstick was massively popular, it was suggested your apply your lipstick, then dust your lips lightly with translucent powder, and after that apply another coat of lipstick. It works, but it feels like you've smeared Elmer's glue on your lips and looks worse. As for lipgloss, I've read from one makeup artist to make sure you blot your lips with a tissue before applying - make sure any excess moisture is gone because that will make it wear off before you're even out the door. Or, to keep it simple, try that L'oreal Infallible Lipstick mentioned above. That stuff ain't coming off! Try a lighter color - I think the problem I had was the color was too dark and it looked odd.
Julie asks: I keep reading articles saying that you should only shampoo your hair a few times a week. I know for me this is true. I can only shampoo my hair every other day or it gets really frizzy. The problem is that the hair at my scalp and around my face still gets oily and limp. Any suggestions? I've read some reviews for different dry shampoos and was wondering if you have tried any of them. Or what about baby powder? I've actually never tried baby powder. I'm not exactly sure the best way to use it. Thanks for any help!
Kelli tells: (*Updated*) I've read those same articles, and unfortunately for me, it's not true. My hair doesn't just get limp and oily, it looks like I dipped it in a vat of Crisco. So I've really wanted to try the dry shampoos, and I've seen lots of recommendations, but since I never go anywhere but Target, I haven't found any yet. I have heard that baby powder will work, but can sometimes be visible. You can find some good tips here. In fact, somewhere on there they say they have what's called "shampoo in a cap" at Walgreens. (However, a Google search pulled up no results for me.) Maybe you can be our first "dry shampoo" review! I'm curious to know if it works, because I would love to not have to wash my hair all the time.
*After posting this, my sister e-mailed me the name of a dry shampoo that she very highly recommends. In her words: " I recently bought (and LOVE) some dry shampoo from Toni and Guy and it's awesome. It was $21.54 with tax. Kinda high but I have only been washing my hair twice per week as opposed to 3 or 4. The scent isn't wonderful, but much better than greasy dirty hair smell. It's called Rockaholic Dirty Secret Dry Shampoo. Sooo worth it."
Vanessa asks: Hey can you find me a good face wash and lotion? I am a little lost on which to buy. My skin is dry, kinda sensitive. Thanks for your help.
Kelli tells: The face wash I have heard the most rave reviews about is Cetaphil. They have two formulas - one regular and one for sensitive skin, although both are extremely gentle. If you like a little bit of lathering - I recommend the regular. (I happen to like A LOT of lather, which is why I don't use it, but that's just me.) But if it doesn't matter, the sensitive formula is also very good. I've never talked to or read about anyone disliking Cetaphil. I've read about it in literally dozens of magazines, online, and recommended by any dermatologist you'll talk to. They also have moisturizers with SPF.
Thanks for reading! If I'm in a really good mood on Monday - I might be feeling generous... if you get my meaning...

You Ask, We Tell Vol. 2
Julie asks: Do you prefer a pencil eyeliner or a liquid one? Do you stick with black and brown eyeliners or do you ever go for a color? Any application tips?
Kelli tells: My answer is a mixed one of personal opinions and some advice from professionals. I like the way liquid eyeliner looks, but it's way too easy to mess up, and hard to fix. Whereas a pencil, if you mess up, you can just smudge it for a kind of smoky look and you are good to go. There are actually a lot of new powder eyeliners on the market now, my newest find being L'oreal Bare Naturale Gentle Mineral Eyeliner. Stored separately in the cap is an amazing brush. It's very thin and a little stiff and it draws a perfect, liquid-like line. I would buy it for the brush alone. It has great colors that aren't too crazy, like navy, bronze, and olive. That being said, ahem, I LOOOOVE to use bright, unbsubtle colors. When I use a bold liner, sometimes I don't put anything else on. I think that looks quite pretty. Or sometimes I'll use a complementary color, like say navy blue liner with a lighter blue. But also sometimes I'll do fun combos. I've done navy liner and shimmery gold shadow. For those last two options, the shadow has to be subtle though, and just on the lid, not up to the brow bone. But that's not for everyone. It just depends on your taste. I know Missy likes to be more understated, whereas I'll go all out!
Bobbi Brown recommends the following colors for blue eyes: ash, taupe, gray, heather, slate, and lilac. Now here's where I give my two cents, just in case you are wanting extra color. With your red hair, I personally believe you can get away with greens or even teal, but I'd really have to see it on you. Revlon ColorStay has the perfect navy color, it lasts all day, and I think it would look great with blue eyes. The original thinking with makeup was that you should never use the same color as your eyes, but use colors that are the opposite. But more recently, that's getting debunked and some makeup artists even recommend matching, or complementing your eye color. Honestly, it all just depends on self-expression and taste.
As far as application is concerned, for making a smooth line along the upper lashes, Laura Mercier recommends you start at the outer corner and draw a series of dashes with an eye pencil as close to the lashes as possible. Then connect the dots. She said it's the best trick she ever learned.
Vanessa asks: Do they make [Maybelline ShinyLicious Lip Gloss] in any other colors? Is this the best color you saw for red heads?
Missy tells: One thing I've heard people complain about with this gloss is that it doesn't have a lot of pigment in it. This is true of this color, too, but it has a silvery bronze sheen to it, which makes it a more understated but super shiny coat. The lack of pigment would almost mean that any color of this lip gloss would work with most skin tones, and you can change it to your liking with an under layer of lipstick or stain.
That being said, there are a lot of different colors, a couple of which I want to try: Raiz'n Razzle and Sugar Plum. Both are on the neutral side and would be perfect for redheads. But I'm chicken when it comes to doing something daring with my lips, so I'd say try any color you really love and see if it works for you. Lolli Pink has me intrigued for something more springy. :) I may even pick up a new shade today and let you know!
Anonymous asks: I have been struggling with some really crappy skin lately. I have combination skin. Oily and dry. But lately, I have had ridiculous breakouts and ridiculous dry patches to the point where my skin is flaking. You can SEE it. Like I got sunburned or something (which I didn't) and now it's starting to flake. Suggestions? It's so embarrassing! I swear by my Mary Kay products and hesitate to use anything else because my skin is so sensitive. Not sure what to do though. HELP fashionistas!
Missy tells: The first thing I would ask is if you have introduced anything new into your skin care line? Or even a new soap or detergent? If so, stop using anything new immediately and see if there is any improvement in your skin. Sometimes stress or other hormonal problems can cause your skin to go berserk so oftentimes you just have to ride out the storm, so to speak. If your skin gets worse, and nothing you are doing to improve it makes it any better, I would recommend going to go see a dermatologist. Over-the-counter skin care products and cosmetics aren't always the answer to having healthy skin, sometimes seeing a professional is necessary! I noticed that Boots at Target has a new Sensitive skin care line and it looks like that might be an option for you, too, to get your skin really clean and free of any chemicals that might be reacting badly to your skin. Best of luck to you!
Shannon asks: OK, now that I know how to exfoliate, what balms do you use that WORK? I have the DRIEST lips ever, and I am constantly peeling them, so that it DOES look like I am an extra in Fight Club! I use Burt's Bees right now, but they are still SO dry!
Kelli tells: Burt's Bees totally dries my lips out. I don't know if it does for everyone, but there you go. Missy is going to be checking several lip balms sometime soon and post the best of the lot. In the meantime, a friend of mine e-mailed us with this tip, which I'm going to start trying tonight; since I'm currently breastfeeding, I just happen to have some of this product in the house:
Amber tells: "After I had my first child (almost 3 years ago) I read on the Lansinoh pure lanolin packaging (normally used for dry, cracked nipples) that it was also good for diaper rash and - wait for it - moisturizing your lips. Ever since my husband and I use it like chapstick and we LOVE IT! So, have you ever heard of this or tried this yourself? If not, I dare you to try it. I put it on at night and in the morning my lips are full and soft as a babies...well you know :)
Seriously it's one of those things that I randomly bring up if someone has chapped lips because it works that well and it last FOREVER. Just the tiniest bit (less than that even) is all you need.
So try it, I dare you! You will never go back to chapstick if you do. I often put it on just after applying lipstick too, it acts much like a lip gloss. You find it in the baby bottle isle with the nursing pads (purple packaging)."

You Ask, We Tell
Introducing our very first question and answer session, compiled from your comments and e-mails. This will be a weekly feature, provided we have questions to answer! Please e-mail us at primpandtell@gmail.com if you have anything you want answered – or even suggestions of products you'd like us to test.
Shannon asks: How do we exfoliate our lips? I use a washcloth lightly in the shower. What do you do?
Missy tells: This may sound silly but I sometimes brush my lips with my toothbrush, after rinsing any toothpaste off of course! Immediately follow-up with chapstick. My lips only get very dry in the winter months and it may be a funny technique, but it's actually quite effective for me!
Kelli tells: Actually both are technically right, depending on who you talk to. I've done both, and in fact used to keep an extra toothbrush just for that purpose. But I've also heard a lot that you should get a wet washcloth and gently rub your lips. I do that sometimes, too. And, yes, immediately follow up with some kind of chapstick or balm.
Sarah asks: I have some acne scars on my chin and a wrinkle in between my eyebrows from squinting that are getting more noticeable to me as I age. You probably have no personal experience about products like this since your skin is flawless, but have you heard the skinny on any good products to address my issues that won't break the bank?
Kelli tells: Spare me, my skin is not flawless! I have the same thing going on with my chin. I found this stuff at Target, brand name is AMBI, and it's supposed to specialize in diminishing scars and dark spots on the skin. I haven't used it much, yet, but it may be something to try. It's very cheap compared to other stuff, too. I bought a scrub and a face cleanser for only $5 each. Or, so far, anything in Oil of Olay's Regenerist line has made me happy – but not totally convinced yet. Still testing that stuff. It's a little more pricey than, say, Aveeno or Neutrogena, but I do recommend both of those. Especially Aveeno. I've never tried anything of theirs that I didn't love. I can always tell a difference really quickly.
Shannon asks: How do you get your hair SMOOTH. Mine has so many fly-aways, and I know I can't get rid of the cowlick, but the rest of it is just crazy. And yours is always nice and smooth. Plus what flat iron do you use?
Missy tells: I always use ceramic flat irons. I bought mine at Sally Beauty and paid full price of $39.99. It's amazing. And I've had it for over 2 years and it's still going strong! I always blow dry with my root lifter and flat iron it straight, finishing with a good non-sticky hairspray. Because my hair is fine, smoothers usually tend to make it greasy. And my hair is only smooth now because it's not 80% humidity outside! See me in the summer and I'll be sporting a pony tail most of the time (or going curly).
Jenny asks: Have you ever found an eye-brightener stick or highlighter stick that you've really liked? What about under-eye concealer?
Kelli tells: I'll get back to you on that highlighter thing, Jenny. As far as concealers, there's actually several I like. My little sister introduced me to one called All Over Brightener by Carmindy for Sally Hansen Natural Beauty. The one I use is actually lavender/pinkish colored and it works really well, believe it or not. You can use your fingers to put it on or with a concealer brush. I bought it at Ulta online. I also use one by Sonia Kashuk at Target. It's part of her mineral line (which I'll be reviewing very soon because it's amazing) and it also works really well. I highly recommend a concealer brush, by the way.
Shell asks: Have you ever bought makeup/beauty products at say CVS that say you can bring it back if you don't like it for 100% refund?
Kelli tells: While I have never taken up a drugstore on the offer, I know a few have that very policy. This is directly from the CVS website, "All CVS/pharmacy Brand products and all beauty products are 100% satisfaction guaranteed or your money back. If you are dissatisfied for any reason, you can return the CVS/pharmacy Brand or beauty product (opened or unopened) along with your receipt or invoice and we will refund the full purchase price- no questions asked." I know Walgreens has a similar policy as well.
Shannon asks: What moisturizer do you guys use?? Mine JUST ran out this morning for my face, and I need something that works? Any ideas?
Missy tells: Right now I'm using Aveeno Ultra Calming moisturizer. It's on my list to review because I'd intended to buy the Positively Radiant by Aveeno but had a brain fart at Target and spent $14 on a moisturizer I don't really like all that much, but am using it because I don't want to fork out the money for the Positively Radiant (which I've only heard good things about) unless I have to! (Whew!)
Kelli tells: I change moisturizers a lot because I like to try new things, but I've been using Neutrogena Visibly Even during the day. It has SPF in it. (Except for this two weeks that I'm using the 14-day Rescue moisturizer.) My favorite ones I've ever used have always been by Loreal. At night, I usually use a much richer night cream. I'm using a lot of anti-aging products right now, because I have a lot of fine lines, so I doubt you'd be interested in that, you young spring chicken, you. I also have to second Missy about the Positively Radiant. My dermatologist recently gave me several samples of it (because it was my birthday) and I love it. I bought the Positively Radiant night cream as well, which I'll report on when I start using it after the 14-day Rescue.
Vanessa asks: I know I should not ask this but, will [Oil of Olay Definity Eye Illuminator] work for guys? My hubby gets dark circle under his eyes. He hates them so I am always looking for something to help him with it. Any input would help.
Kelli tells: I wouldn't use this one for guys, it's kinda shimmery. But some others might work for him. Neutrogena has a good one, and so does Boots at Target.
Elisa asks: Know anything about the brand of makeup that Amy Grant advertises for? Something about hope and positive messages on the product bottles?
Kelli tells: Elisa, I've never heard of it, and after much Googling, I found nothing. But I'll keep my eye out. And if any of you know about this, please let us know so we can pass the info on!
Missy Tells: I wasn't going to let this question goes unanswered! From what I found in this article, Amy Grant is partnering with much-loved cosmetic and beauty company, Philosophy. I'm hoping to get my hands on some of their Kiss Me Lip Balm to help get those dry winter lips summer ready!

CoverGirl Outlast Lip Stain
Consider me a product of all of the movies that take place in days of yore, where the heroine is always a fresh-faced, pink-cheeked maiden with beautiful berry lips. Since before I started wearing makeup, I longed for that perfect sheer crimson lip, the one that looks as if the owner of said lips was just born under a lucky star and effused that “flushed and bruised from a good, hard kiss” look.
I really have (almost) found my perfect lip stain. While most others are straight liquid, it is hard to get them to stay within the lip line, and oftentimes they will actually drip. Or they just go on too heavy, not heavy enough, or they fade. When I saw the magazine ad for Cover Girl’s new lip stain, I was beyond excited, and started looking in the aisles when I visited the store immediately. I luckily did not have to wait long, and I promptly bought three different colors: Wild Berry Wink, Teasing Blush, and Flirty Nude. I love them. They work just like a marker – it’s a Sharpie for your lips! You can literally line your lips and just draw it right in. I highly recommend wearing a balm over it, as it can be a bit drying, but not as bad as most other long-lasting lipsticks, which make my lips peel almost instantly. My favorite is the Wild Berry Wink, a gorgeous red that looks bold but not slutty. The darker colors do tend to settle into the lines of your lips a bit, but a tiny reapplication will solve that. Just make sure your lips are well-exfoliated before applying, or you’ll look like an extra in Fight Club, and then finish with lip-balm or lip-gloss. Then go make out for a really long time.
I recommended it to Missy, and she bought the Cinnamon Smile, which I have since also bought, but I’ll let her put in her two cents.
The first time I put this on I was instantly thrown back to being about 6 or 7 years old. I loved scented markers because they had a funny taste to them and would often use them as lipstick, much to the dismay of my mother. It is honestly so much like those old markers that it kind of weirded me out at first! But I was sold when I realized that it works perfect and lasts a long time!
I don't like a really deeply tinted lipstick since I have smaller lips so I use this mainly as an under-layer for my gloss to give it a little more color. I love the Cinnamon shade since it's brown with just the right amount of red tinting to it. It glides on smooth and you can saturate it for a really dramatic look or put on a thin layer for something more subtle.
Please e-mail us at primpandtell@gmail.com to enter our giveaway. We will be giving two of you a CoverGirl Outlast Lip Stain. You have until Thursday at 5 pm to enter, and we'll announce the winners Friday before 10 am! Good luck!
